Aflatoxin M1 fast
Description
Aflatoxins are highly toxic mycotoxins. They are produced by some Aspergillus moulds, i.e. Aspergillus flavus, A. paraciticus and the rare A.nomius. Aflatoxin M1 is the hydroxylated metabolite of aflatoxin B1 and can be found in milk obtained from livestock that have ingested contaminated feed. The main sources of aflatoxins in feeds are peanut meal, maize and cottonseed meal. Also human breast milk can contain aflatoxin M1 after the lactating woman has consumed food contaminated with aflatoxin B1.
For Aflatoxin M1 Maximum Levels (ML) are established legally in Europe. These limits are as follows:
Milk (raw milk, milk for the production of milk based products and heat treated milk): 0.05 ppb
Infant formulae and follow-on formulae, including infant milk and follow on milk: 0.025 ppb
Dietary foods for special medical purposes intended specifically for infants: 0.025 ppb.
EuroProxima has developed a fast ELISA test for quantitative screening on the presence of Aflatoxin M1. The limit of detection (LOD) was found to be 0,005 ng/ml (5 ppt) for milk samples; for cheese and butter the LOD is < 10 pg/ml.
